Cardio Pulmonary System
The transport network of the body is the cardiopulmonary system. The
blood transports nutrients used by the body to it's cells and picks up
waste and takes it where it can be cast out. The cardiopulmonary system
is comprised of the heart, lungs, and blood vessels. There are 3 kinds
of blood vessels.
1. The arteries take blood fresh with oxygen to the body from
the heart. (with the exception of pulmonary arteries and veins which are
the opposite).
2. Capilaries are where the exchange of nutrients and gasses occurs
between the cells and blood. They are narrow thin vessels.
3. Veins are the where the blood flows back to the heart after
the oxygen has been taken. Veins have a very high carbon dioxide content.
The heart is a mucles that is divided into four parts. The upper part
of the heart is called the right and left atria and the bottom part of
the heart is called the right and left ventricles.
The right side of the heart receives the blood from the veins. It first
goes to the right atrium, then to the right ventricle. When in the right
ventricle, the heart muscle contracts and the blood then goes to the lungs
by way of the pulmonary arteries. While the blood is in the lungs, it
gets rid of the carbon dioxide and gets fresh oxygen. The blood then goes
through the pulmonary veins back the the left ventricle of the heart.
At that time the left ventricle pumps blood through the aorta and gets
delivered to the rest of the body.
Blood flow from the heart to the lungs is called Pulmonary Circulation,
and blood flow from the heart to the rest of the body is called Systemic
Circulation.
CARDIOPULMONARY RESPONSES TO EXERCISE
As exercise starts, blood flow increases to the exercise muscles and
decreases to the abdomen. The systolic blood pressure increases and the
distolic blood pressure should stay the same, or possibly decrease slightly.
After a person aerobically trains for a while, during exercise their resting
heart rate decreases and the heart beats fewer times per minute. As a
persons heart rate decreases because of exercise, they must step up their
intensity dring their exercise sessions to keep their heart rate at the
same rate that it was before.
